How to Apply to Teach in the UK

Simply fill out your details and one of our Milk consultants will be in touch with you! You can also view our job listings on our Find a Job page.

Once you pass the initial screening process, you will usually have to complete an application before you reach the formal interview stage. This will need to outline your previous experience and use examples to highlight different key areas, such as differentiation, lesson planning, and assessment.

Generally, your interview will be in stages, and this may be done online. You will be supported through this by your Milk consultant.

Once you pass the interview stages, you will either begin teaching straight away, or at the beginning of the next school term.

Frequently Asked Questions:

I already have a teaching degree from my country. Can I teach in the UK?

Here from Australia, New Zealand, Canada or Ireland?

If you want to teach in England, you don’t need to retrain. For teachers who have Qualified Teacher Status already, you’re good to go!

If you qualified in a different country, please check to see the eligibility for obtaining QTS.

If you don’t have QTS, you will, however, need:

  • to apply for ‘qualified teacher status (QTS),’ or demonstrate strong non-UK qualifications and experience.
  • to pass safeguarding checks by obtaining a DBS certificate (Milk will pay for this if you work with us, so you don’t need to worry).
  • a visa or immigration status that allows you to legally work in the U.K.

Requirements to teach in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland differ slightly, so check the respective government’s websites for more information.

What are the term dates in U.K schools?

School term dates differ depending on different areas, but generally, U.K schools follow the same term time pattern. U.K schools will also have occasional week-long breaks, known as ‘half-term.’

Autumn Term: This runs from early September to mid-December, with a half-term break in October.

Spring Term: Following Winter break, this term runs from early January to late March/early April (depending on when Easter falls that year). There is a half-term break in February.

Summer Term: This runs from April to mid-July, with half-term falling in late May or early June.

How do I get a DBS certificate, and how much is it?

Milk Education will organise and pay for your DBS. The current cost of an Enhanced DBS check is £55.

How can I meet other teaching staff in my city?

When you register with Milk, you’ll have the opportunity to meet other teachers who are living and working here! Currently, we are only running our social events and meet-ups for our educators in London, but we’re looking to expand this to other cities in the future.

Please contact your Milk consultant for more information about social events for other educators in your area!

How does the U.K Education System Work?

In the U.K., schools deliver the curriculum differently depending on their students’ needs, the number of pupils, and the school’s wider pedagogical approach.

The U.K curriculum is similar in many aspects to curriculums in other English-speaking countries but differs slightly due to cultural contexts.

Primary school year groups are typically as follows:

Key Stage 1:

  • Reception (Age 4-5)
  • Year 1 (Age 5-6)
  • Year 2 (Age 6-7)

Pupils will sit SATs exams at the end of Key Stage 1 to assess their phonics skills.

Key Stage 2:

  • Year 3 (Age 7-8)
  • Year 4 (Age 8-9)
  • Year 5 (Age 9-10)
  • Year 6 (Age 10-11)

Pupils will sit SATs exams at the end of Key Stage 2 to assess their reading, writing and maths ability.

Secondary school year groups are:

Key Stage 3:

  • Year 7 (Age 11-12)
  • Year 8 (Age 12-13)
  • Year 9 (Age 13-14)

Key Stage 4:

  • Year 10 (Age 14-15)
  • Year 11 (Age 15-16)

Pupils will sit GCSE examinations throughout Key Stage 4 based on the subjects they have chosen to study. English and Maths are compulsory exams at GCSE for all pupils.
